1. If I’m overweight, out of shape and/or old, can I still do yoga?

Answer: Anyone at any age can begin a yoga practice. You may need to start slowly if you are very out of shape, overweight or older. The teacher can show you ways to modify the poses if necessary to make them more comfortable. You can just do what you are able to do, and rest when you need to. You will still get all the benefits of the practice. If possible, you should start in the beginner’s yoga class.

2. Will yoga help me lose weight?

Answer: Yoga (even less vigorous styles) can aid weight control efforts by reducing stress and burning excess calories. Yoga stimulates your metabolism. Yoga postures use every muscle in the body and help tone the whole body. Practicing yoga usually helps you to begin to make healthier choices about your diet. It makes you feel more comfortable in your body and gives you a sense of well- being and self- esteem.

3. I’m very inflexible. Can I still do yoga?

Answer: Most people who start yoga are inflexible to varying degrees. Yoga helps to improve flexibility and range of motion by lengthening muscles, tendons and ligaments. Over time, flexibility increases and aches and pains decrease.

4. I have arthritis, injury, back problems, etc. Can I still do yoga?

Answer: If you have arthritis, back problems, or some sort of injury or other chronic condition; First, check with your doctor to see if doing yoga would be appropriate for you, and ask if you have any limitations to what you can do. Yoga can be very beneficial and therapeutic for many conditions. If done slowly, with attention on correct body alignment and respect for the body, yoga can often rehabilitate injured or degenerated areas.

5. What should I wear?

Answer: You should wear any comfortable clothing that allows you freedom of movement. Yoga is practiced in bare feet.

6. What do I need to bring to class?

Answer: You will need a yoga mat. It is best to have your own mat. It’s more hygienic. We have quality yoga mats for sale at Sunrise Yoga. You can also rent a yoga mat at the studio for $1 per class.

7. How long are the classes?

Answer: Classes typically last for about and hour and a half.  The last 10 min. of the class is devoted to deep guided relaxation.

8. I have trouble relaxing. Will yoga help me relax?

Answer: Yoga reduces the physical effects of stress on the body, reduces the stress hormone cortisol, and encourages relaxation. Yoga teaches people to take slower, deeper breaths. This trigger’s the body’s relaxation response.

9. How many times per week should I practice yoga?

Answer: You can practice yoga every day to get the most benefit. However, even practicing once a week will be enough to feel the benefits of yoga. If you are a brand new to yoga, it is usually best to start in the Beginner’s Yoga class. When you feel ready to do more, you can add more classes to your schedule. Yoga can be practiced at home, and doing even just a few of the poses will be of great benefit.

10. Is yoga some sort of religion?

Answer: Yoga is not a religion. It is a discipline without dogma. A person of any faith can practice yoga. Yoga is a holistic path of health and self-development that is believed to have originated in India over 6,000 years ago. It is a time-tested path for developing a deeper experience of yourself and the world. Yoga is a journey of self-discovery. It is a systematic technology to improve the body, understand the mind, and free the spirit.
